biking Nepal

housands of travellers visit Nepal each year, many to test themselves against those iconic peaks or simply to undertake an arduous trek that will allow them a glimpse of magical Chomolungma (the Sherpa name for Everest). But there is another side to this fascinating country…

Head away from the tourist hotspots and you will soon discover a different land altogether, one rarely mentioned in guidebooks. In the hills and valleys of the Sailung region, only a few hours’ drive from Kathmandu, traditional villages are scattered across steeply terraced hillsides, separated by high wooded ridges and deep river valleys. With each ascent, ever-more breathtaking views of the Himalayas greet the eye, as memorable as the warmth of the welcome you receive on arrival at each mountain community. The people are curious about visitors yet supremely courteous; happy to let you enter their lives and keen to share their local knowledge.
It was the views that did it for me. The panoramas of the High Himalayas had been getting better with each day we walked, but standing at the very top of Sailung, at 3146m, feeling the warmth of a rising sun, a full moon sinking to the west, surrounded by ancient stone shrines, no one else but us, waves of hills and valleys in all directions as far as the eye could see, not a breath of wind, utter silence, knowing that the mountains ahead were still more than twice the height we stood at… that was very special.

Our walking holiday in Nepal has been created in conjunction withVillage Ways. With your own local guide, you explore the mystical Sailung Valley in the so-called mid-hills of the Nepalese Himalaya, while staying in village guesthouses. The people who live here work hard to cultivate a remarkable array of crops yet never to the detriment of their natural surroundings. They are conscious of their place in the rhythm of life, creating an overriding sense of harmony which encourages you to relax into the slow pace of rural life.
